Working with inner tubes and bicycle components reminded me  of The Third Policeman, by Flann O'Brien.

Re-reading it I was again struck by the brilliance of The Atomic Theory. Illustrated by its application to bicycles and their riders, it explains their changes in behaviour to the interchange of atoms between the bicycle and the cyclist on riding over bumpy roads.
