Soft Stone Carving
Soft Stone Carving
The act of cutting away material from a block to reveal the shape you have in the back of your mind, which often turns out rather different from the one you had in your sketchbook, is made a lot easier when the block is easy to work.
At a soapstone carving course led by Christophe Gordon Brown http://www.cgb-sculpture.co.uk/information/classes.htm , which I was given as a birthday present I started looking at conjugations of conical shapes.
In 2025 I started carving conical sculptures using aerated building blocks, which themselves have an interesting texture, but which can be transformed by coating them with limewash.
Some examples below.
This page is to show work that is for sale. Sometimes smaller pieces are listed in my Etsy shop, https://orisitart.etsy.com .
If you're interested in one of the larger works, let me know.
