I use sculpture as a way to develop things, ideas and emotions. Creating a work turns the hazy concept in my head into something tangible. During the build the original ideal will change and grow and result in something that can't easily be expressed in words .
Everything I do to turn that into something that people can see and touch is craft. There should be as little craft as possible so it doesn't detract from the concept and as much as is necessary to allow it to be seen.
Craft is skill, and scale, and finish, and material choice, and technology. It is also the means by which the artistic concept develops, as the piece is made new directions open up , choices have to made as the concept matures.
I started sculpting in the mid 70's using discarded materials from a summer job. Sculpture distracted me from what I was supposed to be doing for a few years before I behaved sensibly, and spent the next few decades in science and technology R&D with Xaar plc.
I retired from Xaar in 2023 and have been building up my portfolio since then.
